Pony Effect Stayfit matte lip colour Review + swatches

Matte lips have been all the rage lately thanks to Kylie Jenner rocking them almost everyday.  As for me, I’m not too into the drying, crinkly butthole look so I’ve been staying away from them.  That and I already have dry lips so I have no business in anything with “matte” in the name.  But of course, when Pony Effect has a new product, you best believe I’m going to try it out! I guess it is east meets west this time since I’m seeing a lot of K-beauty brands come out with their own version of matte liquid lipsticks. So let’s get on with the review and swatches~ヽ(｡･ω･｡)ﾉ

How to use:

Since this is a matte liquid lipstick, this product is no exceptions when it comes to exfoliating and hydrating your lips well.  Matte liquid lipsticks are very temperamental and can only look good if you have no dead skin on your lips, so make sure to exfoliate those lips well!  Also lip balm/lip treatments will be your best friend.  For those of you who don’t have lip packs, you can always just exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush, then apply a generous amount of vaseline and place a piece of plastic wrap onto your lips and let the homemade lip mask begin!  Wait about 10 minutes and your lips should feel and look hydrated.

As for these liquid lipsticks, I wouldn’t use it anywhere else other the the lips.  I also personally wouldn’t do the gradation look since the matte liquid lipsticks aren’t exactly bendable.  It can easily look patchy and odd so just stick to using it all over the lips.  Something that boggles my mind is, why didn’t she come out with matching lip pencils?  When I was swatching these, I had the hardest time getting everything even and looking right with a nice crisp line.  These are also best used with a very fine brush of some sort.Product packaging:
Packaging for these kind of reminds me of Milani’s lip glosses for some reason.  The lids for these aren’t the usual rose gold theme that Pony is going for, along with the logo which is also just regular gold.

The tube itself is clear which is great since I would be able to tell what shade I am grabbing when placed in my vanity.

There is also the sticker on the bottom with the shade name.  Again, I wish they didn’t print the manufacture date on the sticker since it usually covers the shade name.  Oh well, can’t be that picky I guess.

The applicator itself is a very oddly shaped doe foot applicator.  It isn’t the usual kind of stubby doe foot but a slightly longer version.  The point is slightly tapered but I would actually liked to have seem the doe foot tip to not be the fuzzy material because it can’t create that sharp line I’m looking for.  Oh well, I’ll just stick to using a brush.

Color/ Pigmentation/ Texture:
I’m actually quite impressed with the colour selection offered in her line of matte liquid lipsticks.  These shades are definitely not shades I’d expect from any K-beauty brand.  The colours offered definitely screams Kat Von D or Colorpop with the dark brownish red shade to a bright lavender.  There is even the very trendy mauvey taupe shade that everyone is craving thanks to Kylie Jenner’s lips.

*Warning: I tried my very best to make very crisp lines when it came time to swatching it on my lips.  I’m not the best at making super sharp lines, especially with liquid products so forgive me in advance if they don’t look perfect.*
Fantastic*: Cool toned dark brink red shade

In the tube, this shade looks like it would be a dark chocolate brown, a shade I personally would never wear since it looks a little too gothic for my taste.  Luckily, on the lips, this shade actually is a dark brink red shade that is quite wearable.

Once applied onto the lips, for some reason this shade does not go on very smoothly. I found you had to apply this shade in very thin layers, preferably only one layer.  After two layers, this shade bunches up and looks very patchy which you can see a bit in the center of my lips.  This is one of the most temperamental shade out of the ten and I honestly wouldn’t recommend this shade at all.  Formulation needs to improve for this specific shade.

On fleek*: Cool tone milk chocolate brown/ taupe shade with a hint of reddish undertone
When I first got these lippies in the mail, I was too excited and ended up testing out all of the shades one night.  I did actually take a picture and posted it on my IG, showcasing this one shade that really made my lips pop.  I don’t know how on earth my lips look so much plumper, but it does!  It’s magic :O.  Also in the picture, on fleek somehow looks a lot more rosy mauve then the brownish mauve that it is.

In artificial/ natural lightening, this shade looks a lot more of a milk chocolate brown shade with a mauvey rose undertone.  Out of all the shades offered, for some reason, this shade specifically has a slightly thinner formulation, making it a lot easier to apply and create the nice sharp edges, even without a brush.  After it has completely set, it looks quite matte on the lips but it is still comfortable and doesn’t feel like the hydration is getting sucked out.  My lip wrinkles do get accentuated a bit but because they get enhanced, the wrinkle in the center of my lip makes my overall appearance a lot more poutier.  I’m starting to understand the hype with the matte lip trend.

Magnificent: Warm toned rosy mauve

I don’t know who is colourblind, but the promo pictures for “on fleek” and “magnificent” do not look like what it does in real life.  Magnificent is similar to on fleek but a more wearable shade that isn’t so brown.  I personally am not a loud, bright lip girl so this shade is definitely one I’d be rocking most of the time. I’d actually mix this with a little bit of on fleek to get the perfect color I want.

Formulation wise, Magnificent and on fleek along with the two red shades have the best formulation that is easy to apply.  Again, this shade kind of accentuate my lines however, it is definitely not as bad as some other shades.

On point*: Warm toned strawberry pink shade

Like I noted in above, some shades are temperamental.  On point is right in the middle.  It doesn’t go on patchy but you have to make sure to blend out the streaks.  Other then that, the formula for this specific shade goes on quite nicely.  You just have to make sure to work fast since they do dry down in about 30 seconds after application.

This shade doesn’t look that great on my skintone.  I’m most likely going to mix it with some other shade so it doesn’t look odd with my overall appearance. I think those with a slightly darker skintone would pull this off a lot better.

Incredible*: Cool toned cherry red with blue undertones

Now I know your wondering, why are there two red shades in the collection and why do they look so similar.  Actually in person, the two red shades are completely different, at least in a girl’s point of view.  Men would just be like.. it’s red LOL. For those of you who don’t like bright fire engine reds, this shade is for you.  I personally prefer more muted reds since I can pull it off better then bright ones that screams “LOOK AT MY YELLOW TEETH!”  I don’t have the whitest teeth and I’m not about to ruin my teeth with those whitening products since it weakens them.  So blue undertoned reds is the answer.

The formulation for this specific shade goes on the best.  I’m able to create sharp lines due to it’s thinner texture, even with the doe foot applicator!  Everything goes on smoothly and no lumps appeared when I put two coats on.

Flawless*: Warm toned red shade with orange undertones

It may look like this red looks exactly like the one above, but “flawless” is actually brighter.  I don’t mind wearing this red however, I do prefer the first one since it is more muted.  For those of you who like bright warm toned cherry reds, this one is for you.

Formulation and texture wise, I had absolutely no problem applying this smoothly.  With one layer, I got great pigmentation so no need for a second coat.

Exceptional*: Warm toned bright neon coral shade

In the tube and in my picture, this shade doesn’t look that bright.  However once it is on the lips, WA BAM!  It hits you in the face.  I don’t know if I can pull this shade off since it is so in your face.  Those of you who love bright shades and oranges specifically, this shade is for you.  I can see those with a darker skintone suit this shade the best.  Against my pale yellow undertone skintone, I’m not so sure about it but it is a great shade to mix around with.

Formulation however is not that great with this shade.  For some reason, it goes on slightly patchy and going over it with a second coat does not help at all.  The patchiness doesn’t really go away even with blending and applying it with a brush.

Splendid*:  Cool tone light pinky coral shade

Again, another shade that is slightly a bit too bright for my aesthetics.  On the lips, this looks very much like a Barbie shade and not a shade that matches my yellow undertone well.  To me, this shade on myself personally looks like a shade of crayon I randomly pulled out of the box of 56 colors and just picked whatever was the brightest, them slapped it onto my face.

Formulation for this shade is also odd and patchy with just one coat.  Two coats does not help at all and actually makes it worse.  This shade isn’t the worse out of the couple that goes on patchy.  I’d give this a passing grade.

So good*: Cool tone primary grape purple shade

Now this is a very interesting shade, something you’d definitely not see often in the K-beauty world.  This is a shade that would be sold in the Western market by brands like MAC or Kat von D.  I’m glad to finally see something fun in the eastern market.  I have a thing for purple shade, well not such bright purples but I think a 2 to 1 ratio mix with on fleek (2) and So good (1) would make such a perfect muted purple!

I’m also happy to say this shade has one of the better formulations.  It goes on smoothly, no patchiness and it is easy to apply onto the lips to create those nice edges.

Amazing*: Cool tone fuchsia shade with blue undertones

Last shade ends with a bang.  This shade called “Amazing” is a very bright fuschia shade, a shade which you’d need a lot of confidence to rock since it screams LOOK AT MY LIPS!

Formulation unfortunately is one of the worse ones out of the ten shades.  It goes on patchy, something which cannot happen with such a bright shade like this.  Shame since this shade looks so promising.  Because of the odd texture, creating those lines were also a pain in the butt.  Overall, I would stay away from this specific shade for sure.

Great formulation/ texture:

Those with questionable formulations/ texture:
-Fantastic
-Exceptional
-Splendid
-Amazing

Lasting power:
If you are wearing these and not eating or drinking liquids for long periods of time, lasting power is pretty good with these.  After about three hours, I would reapply since my inner lip does start to fade due to my saliva. If you are eating, especially anything that is oily, these will fade around the inner part of the lips as well. Once these have set on the lips, the do not transfer at all and are truly matte looking but still comfortable on the lips if you only apply one coat.  If you do apply two coat, it will feel kind of heavy, like you have a thick layer of foundation on your lips.  One coat does just fine in terms of pigmentation so I don’t see why you’d need two coats.

Fragrance?:
These do have fruity floral scent to them but nothing that is so strong that would make me want to gag and scent does fade once on the lips.  Smell-o-scale= 6/10.

Pro:

-still manages to be slightly hydrating while having the matte look

-some formulas are better then others; hit or miss

Overall thoughts:
I do actually quite like these shades and I really appreciate Pony creating very unique shades to offer to the Eastern world.  Unfortunately, most of the lighter shades’ formulation is off and looks patchy on the lips which is not a cute look.  The darker shades look great while the lighter ones are lacking.  Lasting power for these are quite average with three hours of wear before I’d want to reapply to make them look fresh again. I mean you can wear these for 6 hours or so but it will start to look crusty and plain blah so I wouldn’t recommend it.  Over the course of 2 hours, my lips did start to feel a bit dry but that is a given since these are “matte” liquid lipsticks.  I give these a four out of 5 stars since I do actually really enjoy shades like “on fleek”, “magnificent” and the two red shades.  The other ones, I’m most likely going to experiment around, mix them together to create new shades since a bright grape purple isn’t something I’d want to wear everyday.  I’d like to see the four shades that have an odd formulation to be revised and for Pony to possibly come out with more wearable, everyday shades.
