A’pieu Small face shading kit (Doraemon edition) First impression + Demo

A'pieu small face shading kit reviewContouring was all the rage in the beginning of 2015, and now that the year is ending, I got a contour kit HAHA.  I never have been a big fan of of full on contouring since I thought it was a hassle, but I do use a little bit of bronzer to define my face on a daily basis.  When A’pieu came out with their part two of the Doraemon collection, I just could not resist!  There wasn’t much that I wanted from the collection except for this contour kit and the brow kit.  Everything else was kind of just meh.  Again, I pretty much got sucked into getting this because of the packaging.  Let’s not lie here and say we don’t get things for the packaging, because we all do so don’t be judging me with your judging eyes.  HAHA anyways, let’s start and cut the chit chat.

A'pieu cream contour reviewProduct packaging:
When I first got this in the mail, I was super surprised how small it was.  I don’t know what I was expecting, but in my mind I thought it would be slightly bigger then what came to be.  This product packaging measures 9 cm length x 1 cm width x 5 cm height. Of course the most obvious thing about the packaging is the cute print with three of Doraemon’s face.  Again, the print is actually printed into the plastic and not a sticker or anything that can be scratched off, would I find annoying even with higher end brands still using stickers as limited edition packaging.  They can learn a thing or two from A’pieu for sure.  IMG_9268The compact itself is a traditional snap closure, nothing fancy.  Oddly enough when I was doing the demo, the whole cream part of the compact popped off.  I was like….

IMG_9175Not that it was stuck on with glue or anything, it was suppose to be secured with the little ridges on the side. I don’t know how it came off, but nothing a pop back into the compact won’t fix.  And please excuse the runny nose I will be having with the series of pictures below.  LOL I was sick during that time and didn’t even feel the runny boogers coming down.  I promise it is not green, it’s just clear liquid.

How to use:
Contour honestly depends on your face shape.  I know there is that traditional 3 method where you are suppose to shade from your temples, then down from your ear to midway to the corner of your mouth and back down from the hallows of your cheeks down to your jawline.  I found only recently that is not the only way to contour your face even if it is widely shown on Youtube that is what you should.  This only struck me when I opened the Smashbox contour sticks and there was a little pamphlet with all the different face shapes and the ways you should be contouring accordingly.  Why on earth did it take so long for me to realize that HAHA.contour
a'pieu contour 3
A’pieu advertise that these are the ways you are suppose to use their contour palette.  The pink one is the highlight, middle one is the middle shade and the last one os the darker shade.  I’m sorry but I would not put shimmery highlight right on my under eyes.  That would just accentuate my fine lines and wrinkles, that is not what we want.  I’ll be demo-ing how I used it down below on myself, so keep reading.
\(○^ω^○)/

a'pieu contour 4Color/ Pigmentation:
There were two shades but I picked the lightest one since I didn’t want it to be too dark.  The second shade available looked a little too warm for my cool skin tone and this one seemed to be perfect. Shade 1 palette contains a fine shimmer
champagne (nothing really special), mid toned cool milk chocolate brown and a darker milk chocolate brown.  The highlight is actually a big disappointment to the palette, and if they were to have changed it to a better one, I’d give a better grade for this palette.  I might have become a little too accustomed to Becca’s shimmering skin perfector and their highlights because I have caught myself comparing other highlighters to theirs.  They got their highlight products down pat!!  Becca’s highlight on the skin makes it look like my skin was misted with moisture or something, especially in pictures.  The cream highlight proved in this palette was acceptable however I found the shimmers to be slightly too chunky for my taste and does not have the same moisture touch that Becca has.  I would use it if I was desperate, but definitely not my first choice.

As for the contour shades, they were pigmented enough if you were to use it for everyday use and wanted a natural look.  This is not something you would want to use if you were to take photos since it is slightly too subtle as you will be able to see down below.  The tone of the two shades were perfect paired with my cool undertone skintone, and if you have a warmer undertone then me, I’d suggest the second shade.  I would not recommend anyone with a skintone higher then MAC NC25 to get this palette since it looks a little too natural even for my natural liking taste.  I would just be a waste of money if you were darker then me, however if you have the same skintone or even lighter, this would be perfect since we pale girls (and boys, I don’t judge) have a hard time getting something that doesn’t make us look like we smeared chocolate poop on our face.

Texture/ Finish:
Texture of the highlighter is no good in my opinion.  They reminded me of ELF’s $1 cream eyeshadows which were greasy, oil, had no pigmentation and just a train wreck all around.  This highlight isn’t a full train wreck since the pigmentation is decent, but if you have uneven skin then this would just accentuate all the imperfections along with the chunky shimmers.  The contour shades is a different story though.  They are both creamy but not too thick like Anastasia Beverly Hill’s new cream contour palette which I find my opinion too thick and would easily look to fake on my skin.  There is a slight translucency when blended out making them look natural on my skin, which you would either like or don’t depending on how you want to use these.  If you want a everyday natural contour look, this is for you.  If you want something to photograph well with and something very pigmented, this is not the product.

A'pieu small face shading kitLasting power:
Lasting power for this palette surprisingly was pretty decent.  Because of the perfect texture of the cream contour, without me setting these babies, I had no problem with lasting power on my dry skin.  I think any type of moisture my skin can get, it would cling onto it for dear life.  I wore this for more then 8 hours and it was slightly fainted by the 6 hour mark. The highlight can just burn in hell LOL.  I hate it.  Let’s not talk about the highlight.

IMG_9181I decided to use this brush from Sonia Kashuk I got when Target was still open for business in Canada.  Sadly they left us Canadians :(.

IMG_9182

IMG_9183Starting with the lighter brown shade.

IMG_9193I like to contour on the hollows of my cheeks..

IMG_9194Temples …

IMG_9195…my chin since I have a long face and want to slim it down a bit.

IMG_9196..bridge of my nose

IMG_9199A new technique I learned recently was to do a line over the tip of my nose to kind of break up the straightens of the nose contour.  I always loved the little button nose look and I don’t natural have it, so fake it till you make it haha.

IMG_9200Blend it out.

IMG_9201You can barely see the definition but I promise it is there.  Left side is the after, right is before.

IMG_9203Before…

IMG_9202After…

IMG_9204Now in with the darker shade…

IMG_9205 2I’m pretty much doing the same thing here with the darker shade.  A’pieu’s instructions shows a different method with the two shades, but being the rebel in me, I just winged it.  It still turned out pretty good though :).

IMG_9205

IMG_9207

IMG_9208Blended out…  It looks pretty good actually.

IMG_9209

IMG_9215Let’s finish it off with doing the other side as well.

IMG_9219Looking at the pictures now, there is definitely a huge difference from before and after contouring.  Not the Youtube before and after with the dramatic, drag queen style of make up but a more natural everyday look.  Don’t get me wrong, I love me the style that is more commercialized on Youtube, but let’s be honest.  We wouldn’t do our make up for an hour and a half just to go to the grocery store right?

IMG_9220

IMG_9221Finish this off with the highlighting cream that I hate LOL.  Okay, hate is a strong word.  I don’t like it.  There…

IMG_9222Some on the tops of my cheeks…

IMG_9223…my chin

IMG_9224And a little on my forehead for the finishing touches.

IMG_9232Added a little bit of blush and some YSL tint in oil.  Done ٩(◦`꒳´◦)۶

Pro:
-cream contour texture is nice and creamy, pigmented enough for everyday wear
-compact
-one stop shop for contouring needs
-very affordable for 9,000 won

Con:
-highlighter sucks
-palette can pop out sometimes if not popped in correctly
-not very user friendly since you need a brush to apply

Overall thoughts:
My expectations was never really high to begin with since I never know what to expect with Korean cosmetics that I buy online.  I wish I was in the physical store, but that is near impossible with me living in Canada so I can only rely on online pictures when I’m doing my purchases.  With my past experience with A’pieu, I’ve found their products to be very high quality despite their very affordable prices and have easily become one of the brands I keep a close eye on.  I knew going into it, the packaging would be amazing since the rest of the Doraemon collection did not disappoint.  The actual product itself did not fully disappoint since the formulation of the cream contour was exceptional, however the cream highlighter kind of killed the mood.  I don’t know why they would include that chunky, not awesome, greasy-ish higlighter.  Overall I do like this product and they are good products but not something I would reach for on a daily since it would be an extra step to grab a brush and apply this on my face. I would recommend this product if you are very pale and still have not found anything that would fit your skintone, anyone with the skin color lighter then NC25.

What do you guys think about this product?  Do you think it is a good product?  Are you going to buy one for yourself?  Let me know in the comments down below what you think, I love hearing from you guys. ( ¯•ω•¯ )

I love how subtle it is and that it is alright for the price. You look great, as always! ^^ ♥

I do like how subtle it is as well but I’m too lazy to add another step and dirty another brush. And thank you love 🙂

Hey good post!! I bought the edgy version of the pallete and I agree with you a lot about the highlighter it’s just horrible. I just use it on the cheeks cause it’s too greasy for on top of the nose and forehead, for me anyways. When I received the little pallete I was excited but then I realized I didn’t wanna have to use brushes to apply, etc. you look good with the product on and did great at capturing it in photographs. I’m curious to try the cushion bronzer from the collection as an alternative. But for now I’ll stick to my Cristal blushers. They’re everything

    1. Christina

We have the same thoughts :D. I wouldn’t try the cushion bronzer honestly since it is a really liquidity consistency and you’d have to apply it with a air puff which really doesn’t make any sense. It would make more sense if they changed the shape of the air puff to something more of a triangle or something but a circle would not do a good job with contouring.

  3. Noah

I agree that the second shade is meant for darker skin tones, but it definitely leans towards the cooler side. I’ve swatched them both in store and the first shade is perfect for fair skin with yellow undertones (like moi lol), but I’m hesitating whether to get this or the Aritaum magic cream contour kit which doesn’t contain a highlight that I won’t ever touch like in this one!

    1. Christina

Hmm I would definitely not recommend this one from A’pieu. The texture is not long lasting and just slips and slides.
