Too cool for school Artclass by Rodin contour, blush, highlighter Review + demo + swatches

Too cool for school artclass by Rodain contour, blush, highlighterIf you’ve been around the K-beauty block for a while, you’ll know about the Too cool for school contour pact which comes with three shades in one compact.  Within the past year or so, they came out with a blusher and highlighter as well.  Just this past holiday, they came out with a palette with three of these all in one slim packaging for around 30,000 won if I’m not mistaken but the sizes are a bit smaller.  I would have totally picked it up but I already had all three of the full sizes coming my way (courtesy of Jolse) so I opted out on it.  Now that I finally have them in my hand, let’s see if they are worth the hype or not shall well.  Let’s go go go!

By Rodin:
“Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), a pioneer of modern sculpture, was known for his vivid depiction of human expressions and emotions through sculptural works which at the time were viewed as mere ornaments, and developed sculptures into an independent art form.  His artwork captured the expressive details as well as the physical vitality of the human figure.  Too cool for school artclass by Rodin, a product inspired by Rodin’s world of art, is designed to aptly render subtle outlines and accentuate distinct features.”

too cool for school art class by rodin contour blush highlighter reviewProduct packaging:
Too cool for school always kills it with the packaging.  Their whole branding has a very unique graphic design with a couple of lines in their brand including art class, dinoplatz, and McGirly just to name a few.  These three products are from the artclass line and all of the same graphic design on the compact.  The compact itself is a sleek matte black casing with the traditional snap-shut closure.

too cool for school art class by rodin blushWhen you first get the product, it comes cutely wrapped with tissue paper held together with a “by rodin” sticker.  I kind of don’t want to throw away the box because it is so cute!  It kind of reminds me of 1920’s circus posters for some reason.too cool for school art class blush reviewkorean blush reviewInside you’ll find a nice sized mirror which you can see 75% of your face.  The product itself comes in a circle dividing into three parts. The strips are usually vertical but for reason, my highlighter comes slanted.  Not sure if that is normal but I’m pretty sure it isn’t LOL.

Color/ Pigmentation:
I was honestly scared these wouldn’t be pigmented since K-beauty isn’t really known to be super pigmented.  For pale skin girls like me, I do really enjoy K-beauty contours since they work very well with my skin colour and usually is subtle but natural.  Too cool for school’s contour pact is famous for a reason.too cool for school art class bronzer contour review
So the contour pact comes with three shades, light white chocolate mixed with a hint of milk chocolate, light chocolate truffle shade, and a true milk chocolate shade.  LOL yes, I compare colours with food because I’m a fat ass like that :P.  When I’m starting off with my bare face, I like to mix the lightest and the medium shade together and carve out my face first so I can get a nice gradation.  Then I go back into places where I want to define some more like my cheekbones and my temple with the middle and darkest shade.

too cool for school art class contouring pact swatch reviewThey said you can use the lightest shade as a “highlighter” but really, that isn’t a highlighter.  It’s more of a mixing colour then a highlighter.  The middle shade kind of reminds me of Pony effect’s nice shading “behind story” which is one of my most favorite shade of contour from her line of make up.  The darkest shade is about three shades darker then the medium one but if you are darker then NC/NW30, I’m not too sure if these would work since they already look really natural on my pale skin.

Mixed together, you get a nice light brown with a slight grey undertone which aids in a very natural looking contour.  All the shades don’t have any orange warmth to it which is ideal if you want a contour that looks supernatural.  No muddy mess here!

too cool for school trio blush reviewThe blusher comes in three shade as well but unlike the contour version, this actually has three very different colours.  The lightest shade to the left (compact is backwards for photo taking purposes), it is a very light peachy beige shade.  The middle is a true peach shade and the right is a strawberry milk shade colour.  too cool for school blush swatch reviewSwatched separately, these has their own individual identity.  The lightest shade is almost barely there even on my pale skin, so we’ll just use that as a transition shade.  The middle colour is that light powdery peach shade and the right is a true strawberry milkshake shade.  All mixed together, you kind of get a muted highlighter pink trying to be tame, going to the pastel peach side but still has that bright pink colour peeking out.

too cool for school highlighter reviewYep, looking at the promo pictures, my highlighter is definitely defective LOL.  On the left side (your right), it should be the lightest shade which is a shimmer light gold shade, middle is a shimmery light pastel orange and the right (your left) is a gorgeous rose gold shade.  Swatched individually, the differences are very apparent.  I’d even use these separately if I don’t feel like mixing it together.  Heck, I’d even double it as an eyeshadow or to use it in my tear duct for a more “awake” look.  All mixed together, the colour comes out like a rose gold shade leaning towards a slight light orange bronze colour.

too cool for school highlighter swatch review

korean highlighter swatchTo my surprise, this highlighter is actually quite pigmented!  I just wish the formula was finer and not so shimmery eyeshadow in a giant pan type of ordeal.

Texture/ Finish:
For the contour and blusher, they have the same consistency.  They are both matte with no types of shimmers and they aren’t like your typical powder blushers.  Just like how they described it as it doesn’t seem to look dry even if you “accidentally” use too much.  I air quoted accidentally because I have a heavy hand when it comes to blush and contour keke.  To the touch, it almost feels chalky but silky at the same time.  It is quite weird and I suspect maybe there is mica or something in it.

The highlighter, on the other hand, is completely different from the contour and blush.  Imagine those super shimmery shadows but in a giant pan form. This kind of reminds me of the first-ever eyeshadow palette I bought long ago at Claire’s at the beginning of my high school days.  Back then, there wasn’t Sephora in Canada or any big brand make up other than the typical old lady department store brands like Estee Lauder, Lançome, Elizabeth Arden.  The shimmery palette came in little strips and they felt kind of chunky but it swatched really nicely on the skin.  Super duper shimmery, just like this one.  Although the texture isn’t as gritty as that palette, this is kind of like the distant cousin that is in her 20’s.  A little more refined but came from the same bloodline HAHA.  I hope that made sense.  This highlighter blended out looks very apparent since it has a mixture of fine shimmers and larger shimmers.  If you are into more fine shimmer highlighters like Becca’s highlighters, Mac’s soft and gentle, you may not like this.  I personally don’t mind it if I’m in the mood for it but most likely won’t be wearing it much for the day time since I don’t enjoy large shimmers on my face.

Lasting power:
The contour lasted about 6 hours before fading, blusher was also around the same life span.  The highlighter kind of disappeared around the 4-5 hour mark but then again, when it was applied with a brush, you didn’t get much “glow” rather then shimmery chunks on the face anyways.  Do keep in mind I have dry skin, almost never use a primer and I like to leave my BB cushions un-powdered.

Fragrance?:
All of these do not have any type of fragrance to them.

Demo demo time!  Whoo Whoo~  Here is my face with just foundation and a little bit of lip balm on.  Keke I didn’t even notice there was some cushion on my upper lip :P.  Please ignore that.

too cool for school contour reviewLet’s start off with the contour!

Not going to go too much in depth of how to contour since I have explained it a whole lot in the past.  If you guys are interested, I can do a whole post on how to properly contour for your own face shape if you are interested.

Here is before…

korean contour reviewAnd here is after.  The difference is quite noticeable and I may have went a little heavy handed with the contour, like I always do.  But when I finish it off with the blush and highlighter, it will look normal I promise.

Next up, blusher.  I used the lightest and middle shade all over my cheeks and even bring it up to near where my eye is for that “drunk” look which I’m really enjoying at the moment.  Then I mixed the middle shade and the darkest shade and applied that to the apples of my cheeks.

Last but not least, highlighter.  No strategy with this one.  I just mixed everything together and called it a day.

Here is my whole face done, contour, blush and highlighter all together.  Told you it won’t look crazy haha.

Okay now to transform!  Imagine the galaxy background with the glitzy Sailor moon “make up transformation” type of deal HAHA.  Can you imagine if we all woke up and just screamed “MOON PRISM POWER… MAKE UP” and have all your make up and clothes changed in a flash, I’d wake my ass up in a jiffy.

Pro:

Overall thoughts:
Contour:
If you are in the market for a foolproof contour, or you are just starting out, I’d highly recommend this contour “kit” but that is if you are my skin colour or maximum two shades darker then me.  It contains three shades which is great for mixing and the price is really affordable.  Like what you saw up above, it gives the skin a very natural look without looking orangey or muddy.  Overall I really do like this contour and can see why this product is one of their best selling products.  Two thumbs up and highly recommend it.

Blusher: Although I do like the formula which prevents heavy handed people like myself from overdoing their blush, this blush isn’t super special hence the average score of 3/5 stars.  I do like how there are three shades so if I’m traveling and want to pack light, this will be a product I’d consider bring with me since it is a easy and no brainer type of product.  Again, I’d also recommend this to beginners since it is fool proof and you get three shades in one. This along with the contour kit would be great starter products to work with and for $17 and your getting three shades, that the same price as one Mac blush.  You do the math.  Bottom line, overall not a shabby product but I prefer other blushes that I have in my collection.

Highlighter: This highlighter kind of reminds me of the Bobbi Brown shimmer brinks but this one from Too cool for school has a touch more larger shimmer particles.  On the skin it looks decent but if you were to have any type of unevenness or dry patches, doom.  DOOM I tell you.  Not my most favourite highlighter out there but the “darkest” shade, the rose gold colour, GORGEOUS.  I most likely will just use this as eyeshadows.  I’d say get it if you don’t mind slightly larger shimmers but for me, this product would be a pass.

What do you guys think about these products from Too cool for school?  Have you tried the legendary contour pact and what are your experiences?  Let me know in the comments down below and let’s chit chat~

Do you plan to try the SSIN Stealer Behind The SSIN Countour? I heard it’s comparable to the Art Class by Rodin! Love your reviews♡

I didn’t try the one from Ssin stealer since I was kind of disappointed with the set I got from her collaboration with wonder place. The contour was not shabby but the rest of the box made me question the brand’s pigmentation and powder texture. From the looks of it, it seems like they are getting rid of the Ssin collection since everything is 50% off at the moment.
