Pony Effect That Girl Luminous Contouring Palette Review + demo

Pony effect that girl luminous contour palette reviewPart three of Pony effect WHOO~ ย I’m super excited to share this review with you since this was one of the items I was eyeing when the Pony Effect line was released. ย Contouring is one of those products which us pale girls have a hard time with since the lightest shades available on the western market are either too orange or still way too dark. I always have faith in my Korean cosmetics since they are designed for pale, yellow undertone people. ย Let the reviewing games begin!

The theme throughout the Pony Effect packaging is constant, with their hologramic brand logo, “that girl” motto and the thunderbolt that reminds me of Electrabuzz and Harry Potter all at the same time.ย

IMG_9335ย The product comes nicely protected with double layers, the black slip that reveals the amazing holographic awesomeness underneath.

IMG_9336

IMG_9338In the back of the box includes a diagram with the name of the shades and description of the product which is sadly, all in hangulย (ฮ˜๏ธนฮ˜)แƒก which reminds me I really should take up classes to learn Korean.

IMG_9340Inside, of course, is the actual compact. Pony Effect again is in the holographic touchย with “that girl” printed in purple. ย Both are scratch resistant which is always something I look for when products are printed. ย This tells me they did not skip on the details! IMPORTANT…well to me. ย I don’t want my products to look like a car ran over it if I only used it twice.

IMG_9344
IMG_9378The compact has the traditional snap closure with a button where you push to release to open.
IMG_9348The mirror, just like the eyeshadow palette, sits up at a 50 degree angle. ย You can easily see your whole face with this mirror and would actually be a mirror I would use if I was on the go.

Pony effect luminous contour palette reviewInside the compact houses the four powders with a plastic cover to indicate the different shade names. ย I would have liked to see the shade names printed onto the compact, but the names are already on the back so there really was no need for the plastic cover to be honest.ย

IMG_9354Color/ Pigmentation:
With the shades available in this palette, would not work with anyone with the skintone shade higher then MAC NC25. ย This palette almost barely worked on me! ย I was actually surprised that the two brown shades on the bottom did anything for me! So I would not suggest anyone with a darker skintone then me to get this palette because most likely, it wouldn’t even show up on your skin!

pony effect that girl contouring paletteMuse maker- cool toned, light yellow champagne shimmer highlight with fine sliver shimmers

IMG_9356Angel skin- Light peachy pink highlight with gold shimmers

IMG_9357Divine work- Light cappuccino brown with fine gold shimmersย

IMG_9358Behind story-ย Matte milk chocolate shade

IMG_9362I really expected the highlight shades to be amazing since Pony, being a self taught make up artist who is always exposed to products, would produce a product that she would personally be satisfied with. ย I personally really like my highlighters to have a very fine shimmer finish, so I thought Muse maker would be exactly what I like. ย Sadly, the payoff was not pigmented enough to show the beautiful light champagne color.

Angel skinย is the weakest link on this palette. ย It virtually does not even have any payoff except you would see a dusting of the chunky sliver glitters. ย It had so much potential but sadly it did not even show up on the skin.

Divine workย actually turned out to be pretty good! ย I was worried it would b way too light, even for my pale skin but surprisingly it contoured my face really naturally and actually gave me definition.

Behind storyย along with divine story works great together! ย Divine work gave me a hint of definition and behind story sealed the deal. ย I really like these two shades and would even ditch my Benefit Hoola Bronzer for these two shades.

Texture/ Finish:
Texture of these powders could use a little work in terms of it being slightly too stiff. ย My make up brushes are able to pick the powder up and apply on my skin with no problem in terms of the contour shades, but I would like to see the highlighters to be more of a silkier texture. ย I do understand that the Asian cosmetic culture leans more towards a natural look, but I don’t believe anyone would want a product that only kind of works. ย I admire the girls on Instagram and Youtube with their fully made up faces with the heavy chiseled face and heavy highlight that could light your house for days, but not a look I’d want to wear on a daily basis. ย However, I’d rather have my highlight to be way too pigmented (if that is even possible)ย and be able to control it with my own manual application rather then trying to pile it onto my skin because it has no pigmentation.

Finish of the highlighters, well they don’t really show up, let’s be honest. ย Muse maker does kind of show up, but mostly just a strip of fine gold shimmers while Angel skin is just chunky gold shimmers with no light peach pink payoff. ย Divine works, although it contains gold shimmers, comes off pretty much matte which is what I prefer if I were to contour my face. ย Behind story is perfect with a matte finish and defines my face with no problem.

Lasting power:
I never really have a problem with lasting power since I do have dry skin, and anything that gets applied onto my skin would usually cling onto anything and everything, including my dry patches! ย The highlighters, again don’t really want to talk about them but they don’t show up to begin with so those are dismissed. ย The contour powders worked fine, with average of 5 hour wear time and then it would start to fade.

Demo time~IMG_9546My face is “bare” (meaning no blush, bronzer, highlight) but I do have BB cream, lipstick, eye make up and brows filled in.

IMG_9555

IMG_9559

IMG_9560Excuse the finger nails. ย I only painted my left hand because I can’t for the life of me be able to paint both hands and make them look decent. ย That and working in the food industry, got me never wearing nail polish. ย But for the sake of the review, I will paint my nails for you guys :). ย Just please ignore the mismatching hands.ย ใ€œ(^โˆ‡^ใ€œ๏ผ‰

IMG_9561I tried so hard not to smile so I could show you guys the full contour effect, but I’m a smiley person normally. ย When I don’t smile, I look PISSED. ย So please don’t think I’m pissed, alright?ย โ•ญ( ๏ฝฅใ…‚๏ฝฅ)ูˆ

IMG_9563I’ll be using this Sonia Kashuk brush with the black handle in #26. ย If you have not tried Sonia Kashuk brushes, you are going to have to check them out. ย They are affordable, soft, the cuts are unique and they are not scratchy. ย I love their brushes, especially their brush sets. ย They are priced super reasonable at $30 for 5-6 brushes. ย I even got their 15th anniversary brush set that was only $40 for 15 brushes and even had 50% off when I got it. ย So $20 for 15 amazing brushes, HELL YA! ย This domed shaped brush is great for natural looking contouring and brush as well.IMG_9565Let’s test out Divine work, the lighter brown on the left side. ย With this shade, I will focus more on blending everything towards the center of my face to get the most natural effect.

IMG_9569Starting off with the hollows of the cheeks. ย If you can’t find where your hollows are, you could do the fishy face and contour from your ear to the corner of your lips. ย Just make sure you don’t go too close to your lips or else you’d look like the Corpse Bride.

51161-tim-burton-corpse-brideGreat for Halloween, just not for everyday.

IMG_9571I’m really surprised that Divine work actually did a good job on showing up on my skin and giving me some definition.

IMG_9572Then from the hollows of your cheeks, I like to go down to my jaw and towards my chin.

IMG_9574

IMG_9575If you want to do a little extra, you could also go from your ear and down the center of your neck, contouring your esophagus essentially. ย When preparing for the red carpet, actresses actually like to do this and highlight the side of their neck for that extra glow.

IMG_9577Swipeย a little higher from your temples and back down to your cheek bone. ย You don’t also contour your hair line, but I don’t really like that look. ย I find a lot of the time it looks too fake for my taste.

IMG_9581Without switching out your brush, just flatten the bristles with your hands and contour your nose.

IMG_9583

IMG_9586Before….

IMG_9584After.
As you can see, there is visible definition but we will go back in and use the darker shade which is behind story.

IMG_9587

IMG_9588Again doing pretty much the same thing but this time I’m focusing more on “harsher” lines rather then blending out.

IMG_9589

IMG_9590

IMG_9591

IMG_9595Before…

IMG_9594After. ย Without making my skin orangey or muddy, the two contour powders gave me the definition I needed while maintaining a natural look.

IMG_9596Left (after), right (before). ย There is such a big difference! ย Not drag queen dramatically different, but a moreย natural kind of difference. ย I LIKE!

IMG_9602Now with some blush.

IMG_9604

IMG_9607

IMG_9609Let’s try the highlighter. ย Sigh… oh highlight.

IMG_9610Apply this on the tops of your cheekbones…

IMG_9611and swipe it upwards to blend.

IMG_9612Go down the bridge of your nose. ย I like to focus a little more on the tip of my nose since I really want that “button nose” effect which I sadly do not have. ย Oh well, gonna work with what god gave you.

IMG_9613All done! ย Contour, blush and highlight all have been completed. ูฉ(๏ฝกโ€ขใ……โ€ข๏ฝก)ูˆ

IMG_9614Closer look…

IMG_9615Enhance, enhance, enhance… *as Martina likes to say from eatyourkimichi*

As you can see, you can pretty much not see the highlighter. ย WHY LORD WHY! ย I wanted to love you highlighter, why you like that.IMG_9617All done!ย (๏ผพโ–ฝ๏ผพ)

IMG_9620Reapply the lipstsick annnnd….

IMG_9631I’m done!

IMG_9634What do you guys think? ย I really like the effect. Sadly my camera kind of washes out the color but in person, this product is perfect, well the contour powders that is.

Pro:
-reasonably priced for a palette
-contains two highlights and two tones of contouring powders
-sleek packaging

Con:
-highlighters does not show up
-contour shades will not work for anyone darker then me

Repurchase?:
Sadly no, unless they improve on the formula of the highlighters and the texture/formula of the powders.

Stars given out of 5:
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

?-Horrible, I would not consider it even if was a product that could possibly save my life

??โ€“ย Justโ€ฆ whyโ€ฆ.
???โ€“ A good, passable product but there are a few flaws. ย Nothing major and would consider repurchasing.
????โ€“ ย This product is fabulous and would repurchase when I run out.ย (เน‘โ™กโŒ“โ™กเน‘)
?????โ€“ HOLY GRAIL BABY! ย I NEED A TRUCK LOAD OF THIS STUFF.

Overall thoughts:
I really had high expectations towards this palette. ย It was one of the two things I had my eyes dead set on and sadly it was aย disappointment. ย The highlighters, for the five millionth time, are pretty much non-existent on the skin and the formula is not silky/creamy enough. ย The contour powder texture is a little better and moreย pigmentedย and preformed well on the skin. ย Lasting powder could improve if a primer is used, but could still useย a little bit moreย improvement. ย Overall the palette is decent and I would not throw this against the wall out of rage, but not something I would have paid money for.

The highlighters looked so promising! ;_; The contouring powders look great and not orange. -.-”
However, three of these shades would never work on me. But you seem to pull everything off! Such a beauty! โ™ฅ_โ™ฅ

That aside, The Corpse Bride is one of my favourite movies everrr.

    1. Christina

I know what you mean. I was looking forward to the palette myself but like you said, at least I’m hopeful the contour powders are not orangey. ๐Ÿ˜€

I think my most favourite movie has to be Howl’s moving castle or Spirited away ๐Ÿ˜€

Hi i really had my heart set on this too, i live in the uk and the contour sets here are way to dark for my pale skin ๐Ÿ™ Do you have any other recommendations for contour palletes that are good for pale skin? Thanks! Love your blog :3

    1. Christina

As of right now, I don’t have any contour palettes I can recommend you since a lot of contour palettes out in the market right now, we pale skin girls woudln’t be able to use all of the shades anyways. I currently use Lancome’s Le duo contour and highlight stick in Ivorie, sometimes I use Benefit’s Hoola bronzer or Body shop’s honey bronzer in 01 light matte.

Thank you for stopping by and hope you stay tuned :).

what a letdown ๐Ÿ™ I was actually ready to buy this too lol. there aren’t enough ashy brown/non orangey bronzers out there!! (when will people learn that shadows are not orange hhhhh)
anyway, thanks for the great review! I like that even though you were sent the products to review you really gave your honest opinion.

    1. Christina

Haha Etude House actually came out with a really good orangey, bronze palette you might want to check out. I’ve had experiences with their eyeshadow palettes and they are definitely worth the money. Great pigmentation, good mixture of textures (mattes, satins, shimmers). Here’s the link to what I’m talking about:

Glad you enjoyed my review. I pledge to be as truthful and honest with my reviews and I try not to work with companies that don’t allow me to be 100% honest, even if they do send me the products. ๐Ÿ™‚
