Pony Effect That Girl fever shadow palette

Pony effect that girl fever shadow palette review and swatchesContinuing on with the Pony Effect cosmetic line review, I will be reviewing their eyeshadow palette! ย I’m all intro-ed out, so if you want the longest introduction of my life, click here to check out part one where I reviewed their lipsticks. ย If you don’t know already, Pony (aka. Park Hye Min) is a superstar in the world of K beauty and even became CL of 2ne1’s make up artist. ย If you don’t know these people, you must be living under a rock! ย Consider her the Michelle Phan of the K beauty world and everyone loves her, for good reasons too. ย This eyeshadow palette was created under her direct creative control with a glamorous holiday in mind. ย Let the reviewing begin~ย (ใ€€๏ผพฮ˜๏ผพ)

Pony effectIf you haven’t seen the whole collection, this is what it looks like.

pony-effect-eyeshadow-palette-looks-content-engI don’t know where they found a dark brown shade like the one that the model is wearing, but they should have added that dark brown in the palette to tie everything together nicely.

IMG_9365Again, the cardboard packaging is the same as the lipstick ones, with the sleek black slip and the holographic happiness. I don’t think I can get myself to throw the box away, but I know I have to or else I’d be the crazy hoarding lady and end up on that hoarding show on TLC where I have so much garbage in my house, I can’t open my fridge and starve to death.ย โ— ๏นโ˜‰

IMG_9372I really appreciate that they included the English name as well with a diagram of which shade is which. ย That is always helpful and appreciated.

Things I look for when purchasing an eyeshadow palette:
-mixture of finishes (satin, matte, shimmer/ glitter)
-neutral shades to blend everything out
-highlight shade
-dark shades to contour with or use as a liner
-Can I only bring this eyeshadow palette with me on the go and be able to create a full look without bring any other loose eyesahdows with me?

Product packaging:
This eyeshadow palette comes in a compact format, with a dark purple theme and a holographic “Pony effect” logo printed in the front. ย  In the back, there is a nice clear label with all the shades in English and Hangul and other standard information such as manufacture, where it was made, etc.

Pony effect that girl fever shadow palette

IMG_9377The compact shuts nicely with a push and release closure which secures the lid and insures the compact would not pop open if you were to travel with it. ย The palette itself is made of good quality, hard plastic but does attract a lot of dirty and oily from my hands if I were to wear hand cream. ย The dirt and oil can easily be wiped away with some water, but ain’t nobody got time for that!
aint-nobody-got-time-for-that

IMG_9379 (1)I know some people like their palette mirrors to be able to fold back completely, but I actually like it a lot more when it is able to stand on it’s own. ย This palette’s lid sits at a 45 degree (its really 50 degrees but who’s being precise here) angle.

Pony effect shadowInside is a nice sized mirror, a plastic cover with all the shade names on it and of course, the eyeshadows themselves.

Color/ Pigmentation:
I’m pleased to say that this palette checked off a lot of the things I look for in a palette. ย There areย neutralย shades to blend with, different finishes to play around with, and dark shades to contour with. ย The shade “Bad or good” (bottom right corner, the bright red shade) adds a nice pop and a unexpected surprise to the palette. ย It definitely sets apart from the everyday palettes and does scream “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS” with the green shade right above it. ย I think this is the time when Mariah Carey pops out of a giant gift box and start bailing out her Christmas anthem, am I right or am I right?

Left to right:
In city:
Warm toned, mocha brown (matte finish)
Overdose:ย Cool toned, light gingerbread bronze shade with bronzer shimmers (shimmer finish)
All night:ย Cool toned, medium roasted coffee bean brown shade (matte finish)

As for pigmentation wise, I honestly had really high expectations since Pony is a make up artist and she photographs a lot, I believed she would understand that pigmentation is key when you want make up to photograph well. ย When you scroll down a bit more, you will see what I’m talking about. ย The brown neutral shades on the top row is a nice addition to the palette to tie everything together, but the two brown shades are way too similar to differentiate when applied on the eyes. ย I would have liked to see “all night” shade (milk chocolate brown shade on the right) to stay, but “in city” (lighter mocha shade on the left) to BEGONE and to add a really dark, cool tone brown, almost black shade into the palette. ย That would have tied the palette together a lot better since the rest of the colors were more on the lighter end of the spectrum.

Beautiful Liar:
Burnt grapefruit shade with gold and orange shimmers (shimmer finish)
Ready to party:
Dark plum shade with fine purple and pink shimmers (shimmer finish)
Drunk Dial:
Dark mossy green with a slight purple hue; green, purple, teal shimmers (shimmer finish)

Beautiful liarย is one of the most unique shades I have come across and I do not have any other shade in my make up collection that I have hoarded over the years. ย This is definitely a shade I would use during the spring and summer time for a fresher, more youthful look. ย As for the other two shades, I always classify these as my dragon scale shades. ย These gemstone shimmer shades always make me think of the scales of a dragon or a mermaid and are shades I absolutely love. ย Sadly the pigmentation of these were not up to my standard, I mean even Wet n Wild’s Comfort zone palette which also have two shades similar to this have better pigmentation then these do, and Wet n Wild’s palette only cost $5!

Just 10 seconds:
Shimmerย shade with white, pink, purple and a hint of green shimmers (shimmer finish)
All that glam:
Glitter shade withย tons of gold glitters (glitter finish)
Bad or good:
Cool toned, primary red shade (matte finish)

I think the most disappointing part of the palette for me is this row. ย Just 10 seconds actually is a really nice shade, but you have to top it over a really dark shade to get the full effect. ย On it’s own, it is kind of shade and you don’t see the nice blend of the pink and purple shimmers. “All that glam” I expected to have a lot more pigmentation because it looks like such a rich, 24K gold shade. ย However on the skin, it is just a chunky gold shade that doesn’t really look that good on top of dark eyeshadows either. ย The chunkiness is not really ideal for my taste. ย If I want to have a really glittery look, I like something with a lot more pigmentation, a glitter that almost makes my eyes look like they were covered with diamonds. ย One of my most favourite glitter shades is from the Korean brand called BBia which I actually did get in a past Memebox. ย It is a loose glitter pigment which somehow feels a little wet and slightly buttery to the touch. ย On the eyes, it makes my eyelids look like they are wet and is super dense with glitters, it is GORGEOUS! ย I’m not the biggest fan of glitter since it is a pain in the butt to remove fully, but with the BBia pigments, I will sacrifice!
bbia glitterThe last shade “bad or good” was the one shade I was looking forward to playing around because it was such a vibrant and unexpected shade. ย You rarely find a matte eyeshadow that is this vibrant unless you are talking about Urban Decay’s electra palette, which that palette is out of control but nonetheless fun. ย Something just was not working with that shade and I could not get it dark enough, even layering it several times.

Pony effect fever shadow palette swatchesHere I did a little test with the glitter shades with my Make up forever aqua cream color base in #27 black and #21 Turquoise to show you what it would look like when they are used over different shades such as black and turquoise.ย

IMG_9675Just 10 seconds works great with really dark shades like black and definitely brings out the true beauty of the shade. ย The shimmers appear a lot more clear and looks great overall. ย All that glitters sadly is not like “Just 10 seconds”. ย It looks sad and boring, and way too chunky”.

IMG_9676Again, testing out the glitters but with the turquoise shade. ย Just 10 seconds works fine with a turquoise base but it sort of falls flat since you don’t see the three dimensional potential it has. ย All that glam, again, falls flat and boring.

IMG_9678Just 10 seconds!!ย (โ—โ™กโˆ€โ™ก)

IMG_9680With all the shades, they definitely preformed better with a primer. ย Without a primer, they looked very sheer and not buildable at all.

Texture/ finish:
Texture of these eyeshadows I would give a passing grade. ย If this was a written test out of 100%, I would give this palette 80%. The matte finish has a nice consistency to it but could use a little bit more silkiness and butteriness. The shimmer shades are fine, but I have used shimmer shades from Etude House that has better texture and pigmentation with just one swipe. ย The glitter shades are a bit too dry for my liking and can only be applied with my fingers if I wanted a decent effect. ย Overall, I have felt better eyeshadows from the drugstore and from high end brand. ย Texture definitely needs improvement, so does the pigmentation.

Fragrance:
No scent detected.IMG_9526Here is a look I created with “Bad or good” in the crease, Drunk dial to contour but it was not dark enough, so I topped it with a little but of “ready to party” as well. ย Still was not dark enough for my liking. ย I piled it on with a brush and my fingers, but it still would not go any darker! ย In the center, I used a little bit of “beautiful liar”. ย I topped it all off with a little bit of “all that glam” in the center of my lids but it didn’t really show.

IMG_9518

IMG_9533Here’s a more neutral, everyday look. ย I used “in city” all over my lid as a base shade, then “all night” to contour and “overdose” as a highlight shade.ย The overall look was all right but I got pretty frustrated at this point because I had to keep going back with my brush and pack the color on. ย This look was after I packed it on three times. ย I never have this problem with my eyeshadows from Sonia Kashuk, Etude House, Urban Decay or Wet n Wild.ย (๏ธถ๏ธน๏ธบ)

IMG_9537

IMG_9540

IMG_9544Pro:
-great selection of shade and texture variety

Con:
-pigmentation needs improvement
-texture needs a bit more silkiness, creaminess
-not buildable
-expensive for what it’s worth

Repurchase:
No

Overall thoughts:
I was really looking forward to getting this palette in the mail. Eyeshadows is one of my most favourite things to get when shopping for make up because I can go all out with different colors without getting weird looks from strangers. ย My attention was caught when I saw the bright red shade and the well balanced choices of shades included in the palette. ย Sadly the pigmentation of this eye shadow palette was lacking and was not buildable. ย I do understand that the Asian beauty culture prefers natural looks, but if I wanted a more sheer look, I would just have had a lighter hand and a fluffier brush when I went to apply my make up. ย I want to be the one to determine how sheer and how pigmented I want my look to be and not be bounded by the eyeshadow palette. ย Overall I can only give this palette a 2 star rating since there was too many flaws with this palette and is not worth the $42 price tag which, for a couple bucks more, I could get myself an Urban Decay Naked palette! ย Come on! ย I hope to see Pony Effect’s eyeshadow formula to improve in the future. ย The colors were very well thought out, but the texture and pigmentation did not pull through.

Hi Christina – it looks like Nylon Palette Version 2.0 again! I don’t know if you had the chance to try the Nylon palette (it was released early this year – I think by then, international shipping was gone from Memebox..) but the shades are similar and the pigmentation and quality also sound similar. They had a lot of issues with the Nylon palette and I remember, when talking to Memebox CS about it, they said that palette was one of their number one complaints.

When I saw Pony Effect line, I knew that the palette was something I was not going to purchase until the reviews came out, as I got burned on the nylon palette….

Great review! lots of pictures and details ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hello Michele,

I do remember seeing a Nylon palette from Memebox but I don’t remember too much about it since I wasn’t really paying attention. I could see why people would be complaining about it since there is definitely lot of room for improvement as I stated in my review. That sucks you had such a bad experience with the Nylon palette, but at least they have an amazing return policy where you can return anything (new or used) if it is not up to your satisfaction.

I’m glad you enjoyed the review and the pictures :). I’m a visual learner so I love a lot of pictures myself.

The look you created was beautiful! However, like you mentioned, I don’t think it’s wise to shell out so much money over a palette that won’t even perform. And I know the names are supposed to be inspired by a night out but they seem so random to me lol.
P.S. All That Glam looks so pretty over the turquoise base! โ™ฅ

    1. Christina

Haha yea the names are funny but really we never think, “I’m wearing night out”. XD Its just a name to refer the shade to. And yes I agree with you too, I would not have paid that much money for a palette that only kind of works :S. <3
