Etude House Precious Mineral Any cushion (regular + moist) Review & Demo

Etude house precious mineral any cushion reviewEtude House has been one of my most favourite brands, even before I was picked to be a Pink Bird.  During the month of November back in 2014 till last November, I was a part of the Etude House blogger group where they sent international bloggers their newly released products every month.  Sadly that has ended for me but I was fortunate enough to try a lot of their products in the process.  Since I’m still in my 20’s, I tend to buy products that are mid-ranged affordable.  Iope being the first ever cushion I got to try, Etude House was the second cushion I tried out.  I couldn’t really base my opinion on if it was good or not back then because I didn’t have experience with other cushions out in the market to judge if it was a good fit for my skin or not.  1 year and 26 cushions later, I think I have a good idea on if this is a good pick for you and myself.  Today I will be reviewing two versions of Etude House’s cushions, the moist version and their regular version.  I have also reviewed their pearl aura version in the past if you would like to check it out. So let’s get into the review! ヽ(・∀・)ノ

Etude House precious mineral any cushion reviewProduct packaging:
Packaging for Etude House’s BB cushions is very standard but they always come out with limited edition compact cases that are always adorable.  For the regular cushion, it comes in this pearly cream white plastic compact which you push a button to release, and inside is the standard air puff and the refill itself.

IMG_1838

IMG_1840The air puff itself is also very standard with the blue memory foam like sponge for application.  I usually like to take all these air puffs out of the case and into a container so I know which ones I’d have to wash. Unless I’m traveling around with this compact, that is the only time I would leave an air puff in there.

IMG_1841Open up the lid and inside is the cushion itself.

Color/ Pigmentation:
These two shades I actually did not get to choose myself since it was just sent to me.  I had no say as to which shades I got sadly.  Surprisingly for the regular formula, natural beige W13 worked quite well for me. When I first started buying BB cushions, I always thought shade 21 or whatever was the lightest shade would work for me but I thought wrong.  For my Mac NC25 with yellow undertone, I needed at least a #23 or whatever was the second lightest.  W13 was a decent match for my skintone but the formula did not work for my liking or my skin type.  For the moist version, I got it in light beige NO2 which in my opinion is way too light for me. If I were to have picked, I would have gotten at least natural beige which in the picture, looks like it could work for me.

In terms of pigmentation, if you have only a little bit of redness here and there to cover, this BB cushion would be decent for you.  With one layer, it reduced a lot of my redness. Wth two layers, it evened my skintone and made it look flawless.

Texture/ Finish:
For the regular formula on my dry skin, it looked way too dry and matte for my liking.  It wasn’t fully matte, more like a satin leaning to the matte side.  Once you scroll down to my demo, you’ll see what I mean when I say it does not work for my skin type. With just one layer, my skin already looked like it got all the moisture sucked out of it and accentuated my smile lines and any uneven skin around my cheeks and forehead.

The moist version was a little better but not that much better.  When I first started using BB cushions, I actually thought that this cushion in the moist version could be a favourite.  However now that I look back after having experience with a lot of other cushion in the market, even the moist version from Etude House’s precious mineral line could not hold it’s own.  Yes it didn’t feel as drying as the regular formula and it also had a bit of glow to it, but it looked more like they just added a few more drops of oil.  The BB cream itself still slightly bunched around and made my skin looks slightly cakey but slightly “dewy/oily” all at the same time.  It is quite an odd sight.

Etude house any cushion reviewCoverage:
These cushions will give you a light to medium coverage and it is also buildable.  I would definitely recommend you build it up with thin layers because it can easily look cakey.  Yes I could have used a really good primer and moisturizer, but I’m not reviewing a good moisturizer here.  I’m reviewing the cushion itself.  If it can’t hold it’s own, whats the point of buying it am I right?

Lasting power:
Both these cushion lasted around the same time for me, 6-8 hours.  When applied, the moist version did leave a slight dewy finish but sets in less then 30 minutes with very little transfer after setting.  The regular version pretty much sucked the moisture out of my skin and looked dryer and dryer as the day went by.  After the 6 hour mark, it did start to fade around the sides of my nose and slightly around the cheek area.

Fragrance?:
Both of these have a slight soapy floral fragrance but it goes away after application.  Smell-o-scale= 4/10.  The scent is not strong at all and doesn’t make me gag.

IMG_1575Okay, the fun part.  Let’s test these out!
Bonus question: Can you guys recognize what cartoon am I wearing on my T-shirt?  (^~^)
Also excuse my hair in the demo.  I was too lazy to straighten the ends out after I got back from work and my bangs didn’t want to corporate so I just tied them up as punishment.  Now you’ll be able to see my five finger forehead up close and personal HAHA.

IMG_1576First up, the moist version!

IMG_1577My bare skin with zero make up.

My skin type profile:
-lives in an area with Oceanic climate (West coasts; cool & chilly winters, warm summer)
-very dry during fall and winter; dry during spring, normal in summer

Skin concerns:
-hydration for my dry skin
-flakey dead dry skin
-dark under eye circles from lack of sleep
-slight redness around cheek, nose and chin

Things I look for in my base make up:
-hydrating
-dewy finish preferred
-evens out redness around nose, cheek and chin
-does not cling onto dry patches

IMG_1583

IMG_1585I always like to spray a little bit of water onto the air puff so I don’t pick up too much product.  Just apply it with a stamping motion onto your face.

IMG_1587With one layer, it did even out a lot of my redness but there is some imperfections still peaking out around the cheek area.

IMG_1590Before…

IMG_1589After…

IMG_1591The redness around the sides of my nose didn’t get covered for some reason.  I even flattened out my nose to try and get around those corners but even then, it still didn’t get covered.  Very odd…

IMG_1592It doesn’t seem like it on camera, but light beige NO2 is definitely way too light for my liking.  On top of that, it clings onto any uneven skin, making my skin look very white and pastey like I’m painting my face to become a geisha.

IMG_1594Here is the moist version with two layers on the left side of my face.  My skin tone is definitely a lot more even and it actually does a decent job at covering my undereye circles.  Of course, I’d still have to go back into it with an actual color corrector for the purple undertone under my eyes.

IMG_1596

IMG_1598

IMG_1600Even though this is the moist version, it doesn’t do a good enough job in terms of hydration.  Look closely around the sides of my nose.  It accentuated every pore there is!

IMG_1602And look around my lip area, UNEVEN.  UGH! ¯\_(⊙︿⊙)_/¯

IMG_1603Okay let’s test out the regular formulation.  Excuse the compact, it was a limited edition compact from Christmas of 2014.  Not sure if you can still get this compact but I’m sure it is floating around the internet somewhere for you to purchase.

IMG_1604I’m not going to like this HAHA, I already know.

IMG_1606Here is two layers.  Again, some amount of coverage, light to medium.

IMG_1607I do not like this at all.  The uneven skin is accentuated a lot around my nose and cheeks, making me look a lot older then I am.

IMG_1608It even made my smile lines visible. Grandma Christina status.

IMG_1609The bb cushion also also gathered weirdly around the sides of my nose which is my pet peeve.

IMG_1610Both sides are almost the same with the moist version is slightly less drying looking but not much difference.

IMG_1612Moist version on left side, regular formulation on the right.  You can be the judge.

IMG_1613

IMG_1728With a full face of make up, the finish looks very matte and dry which is not my preference since I already have dry skin.  From afar, it doesn’t look that bad but up close, no. LOL just no. (Θ︹Θ)ს

Pro:
-affordable
-a well known brand that is easily accessible online
-comes with 3-4 shades to choose from

Con:
-drying on the skin
-accentuate things I don’t want to accentuate
-doesn’t come with refill

Repurchase?:
No

Overall thoughts:
After coming back to this cushion, it is clear to me that this cushion formulation is not to my liking anymore.  With both formulations not working well with my dry skin, I cannot recommend this cushion to you guys.  Of course, do take my opinion and experiences with a grain of salt and this could work for you.  Heck, this might even be your holy grail but it is definitely not my favourite anymore.  This is a good cushion to start with for beginners, but I’d recommend my A’pieu Air fit, Missha M magic cushion or Iope to any of you guys out there looking for a hydrating cushion any day!  Etude House’s BB cushions are decent, they are not horrible.  I think these would actually work very well with combination or oily skin (regular formula for you guys) but definitely not the first pick for dry skin.  Overall I give these cushions a passing mark.

What are your thoughts on these cushions?  Have you tried them yourself and what were your experiences like?  What other Etude House cushions have you tried where you had better experiences with?  Let me know in the comments down below!  You know I love to chit chat :).

I laughed at “Grandma Christina status” LOL!!! The limited edition edition case is pretty, but you definitely have some prettier ones in your collection! I wanted to try Etude House but with your review…no thanks! Have you tried the Etude house ones that are in the coloured cases (purple, pink, green I think?) They’re supposed to help with various skin concerns like redness, etc. I’ve been intrigued but haven’t tried. And I know it’s not really a part of this review but I’m super curious what you use for covering the undereye area!!! As for the bonus question…Rugrats?

  2. Midori

I adore the regular formulation of this cushion and the price makes it even better. I think I’ll try the Missha cushion next! \(^o^)/

Glad to know there are some people out there that likes this cushion. It definitely isn’t a bad one, it just wasn’t the right fit for me. 🙂 Definitely try Missha’s next or even A’pieu air fit since there is a matte version now!
